I’ve been listening to a lot of Tabou Combo lately, and then switching to Kai. The difference in production is crazy. Do you guys think the new generation is losing the soul of the live instruments, or is it just a natural evolution? I kind of miss the heavy brass sections.

Great observation! As a drummer, I feel like the digital sequencing in modern Konpa makes it tighter but ‘colder’. That live percussion groove from the 80s and 90s had a human error element that made it swing more.

I don’t know technical stuff, but I know I can dance to both! But nothing beats a sweet T-Vice track from the early 2000s for nostalgia.

The harmonic complexity in the older stuff was definitely richer. Jazz influences were stronger.

Mwen dakò, ansyen konpa a te gen plis chalè ak enèji vivan, espesyalman ak kwiv yo. Nouvo pwodiksyon yo pwòp e byen sere, men pafwa li manke ti erè imen ki fè kò a bouje natirèlman. Kòm yon moun ki nan rehab ak fitness, mizik ki gen groove vivan fè moun danse pi lib, sa ede anpil. Men mwen panse se yon evolisyon, pi bon lè yo melanje teknoloji ak enstriman live, pa bezwen chwazi yon sèl.
